Imagine being trapped in a metal tube thousands of feet below the ocean's surface, surrounded by darkness and the constant hum of machinery. This was the reality for the sailors who served on nuclear submarines during the Cold War.

In Sailor Story Of Cold War Submarines, author and former submariner John Smith shares his firsthand account of life aboard these vessels. From the rigorous training to the dangerous missions, Smith's memoir offers a unique and unforgettable perspective on one of the most secretive and dangerous missions in history.

Smith joined the Navy in 1960, at the height of the Cold War. After completing submarine school, he was assigned to the USS Thresher, a nuclear-powered attack submarine. The Thresher was one of the most advanced submarines in the world, and Smith was proud to serve aboard her.

However, Smith's excitement soon turned to terror when the Thresher sank in 1963, killing all 129 men on board. Smith was one of the lucky few who survived the sinking, and his account of the disaster is both harrowing and heartbreaking.

After the Thresher disaster, Smith transferred to another submarine, the USS Lafayette. He served on the Lafayette for several years, and during that time he participated in numerous dangerous missions. Smith's memoir recounts these missions in vivid detail, providing readers with a firsthand look at the life of a submariner during the Cold War.

Sailor Story Of Cold War Submarines is more than just a memoir. It is also a meditation on the nature of courage, sacrifice, and brotherhood. Smith's story is a reminder of the sacrifices that our military men and women make to keep us safe.

If you are interested in military history, the Cold War, or submarines, then you will want to read Sailor Story Of Cold War Submarines. It is a gripping and unforgettable account of life beneath the waves.

Chapter 1: Joining the Navy

I joined the Navy in 1960, at the height of the Cold War. I was young and patriotic, and I wanted to serve my country. I had always been fascinated by submarines, and I knew that I wanted to be a submariner.

After completing basic training, I was sent to submarine school. Submarine school was tough, but I was determined to succeed. I studied hard and passed all of my tests. When I graduated from submarine school, I was assigned to the USS Thresher.

Chapter 2: Submarine School

Submarine school was one of the most challenging experiences of my life. I had to learn everything there was to know about submarines, from their engineering to their weapons systems. I also had to learn how to survive in a submarine in the event of an emergency.

The instructors at submarine school were tough, but they were also fair. They knew that we were going to be responsible for the lives of our crewmates, and they wanted to make sure that we were prepared for anything.

I learned a lot at submarine school, and I am grateful for the training that I received. It gave me the confidence that I needed to serve on a submarine.

Chapter 3: The USS Thresher

The USS Thresher was one of the most advanced submarines in the world. She was nuclear-powered and armed with the latest weapons systems. I was proud to serve aboard her.

The crew of the Thresher was like a family. We worked together, we ate together, and we slept together. We were all committed to our mission, and we were all willing to sacrifice our lives to protect our country.

The Thresher's mission was to patrol the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean and to deter Soviet aggression. We were always on the lookout for Soviet submarines, and we were always ready to defend ourselves if necessary.

Chapter 4: The Thresher Disaster

On April 10, 1963, the USS Thresher sank in the North Atlantic Ocean, killing all 129 men on board. I was one of the lucky few who survived the sinking.

The Thresher was on a routine patrol when she experienced a sudden loss of power. The crew tried to restart the reactor, but it was too late. The submarine began to sink rapidly, and there was nothing that we could do to stop it.

I was in the engine room when the submarine began to sink. I was knocked unconscious by the impact, and when I woke up, the submarine was already on the bottom of the ocean.

I was trapped in the engine room with several other sailors. We knew that we were going to die, but we were determined to make the best of our last moments.

We sang songs, we told jokes, and we talked about our families. We wanted to live, but we knew that it was not meant to be.

Chapter 5: The USS Lafayette

After the Thresher disaster, I was transferred to another submarine, the USS Lafayette. I served on the Lafayette for several years, and during that time I participated in numerous dangerous missions.

The Lafayette was a different type of submarine than the Thresher. She was a diesel-powered submarine, and she was not as advanced as the Thresher.

However, the Lafayette was still a powerful submarine, and she was capable of carrying out a variety of missions. I was proud to serve aboard her.

Chapter 6: Cold War Missions

The Cold War was a time of great tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. Both countries had nuclear weapons, and there was always the fear that a nuclear war could break out at any moment.

The submarines of the United States Navy played a vital role in deterring the Soviet Union from launching a nuclear attack.
