George Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair in Motihari, India, in 1903. He was the son of a British colonial official. Orwell's family returned to England when he was a child, and he was educated at Eton College and Oxford University.

After graduating from Oxford, Orwell worked as a police officer in Burma. He resigned from the police in 1927 and returned to England. He then began working as a journalist and writer.

Orwell's early novels, Burmese Days (1934) and A Clergyman's Daughter (1935),were critical and commercial failures. However, his third novel, Down and Out in Paris and London, was a critical success. The book established Orwell as a major literary figure.

Orwell went on to write a number of other classic works, including the novels Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). He also wrote a number of essays and non-fiction works, including Homage to Catalonia (1938) and The Road to Wigan Pier (1937).

Orwell died of tuberculosis in London in 1950. He was 46 years old.
