Early Life and Education

Kamala, the elder sibling, was born in Oakland, California, in 1964. Maya, five years her junior, was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1969. Growing up in Berkeley, they shared a close bond, spending countless hours playing, learning, and dreaming together.

From a young age, Kamala exhibited a strong sense of justice and a passion for advocacy. She often stood up for those who were being treated unfairly, whether it was her classmates or her siblings. Maya, on the other hand, was known for her intelligence, creativity, and infectious laughter.

Both sisters went on to attend Howard University, a historically Black university in Washington, D.C. Kamala earned a degree in political science and economics, while Maya studied sociology and public policy. Their time at Howard shaped their perspectives on race, gender, and social justice, and ignited a passion in them to make a difference in the world.

Career Journeys

After graduating from law school, Kamala embarked on a successful career in law enforcement and politics. She served as the District Attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011, and as the Attorney General of California from 2011 to 2017. In 2017, she was elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the second African American woman ever to serve in that body.
