Paul Robeson was born in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1898. His father was a former slave who became a minister, and his mother was a teacher. Robeson was a gifted student and athlete, and he graduated from Rutgers University with honors in 1919. After college, Robeson moved to New York City to pursue a career in law. However, he soon realized that his true passion was music. In 1925, he made his debut as a singer at the prestigious Carnegie Hall.
