Paul Robeson was born in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1898. His father was a former slave who became a minister, and his mother was a teacher. Robeson was a gifted student and athlete, and he graduated from Rutgers University with honors in 1919. After college, Robeson moved to New York City to pursue a career in law.
