Black insurgency, as a form of political action, has been a part of the African American experience since the arrival of the first Africans in the Americas. However, the period from 1930 to 1970 witnessed a significant increase in black insurgency, both in terms of its frequency and its intensity. This book examines the political and social forces that led to this rise in black insurgency.

The author, Dr. James Geschwender, argues that the increased militancy of black Americans during this period was a direct result of the failure of the political process to address their grievances. Despite the passage of landmark civil rights legislation, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, black Americans continued to face discrimination and violence. This led many black Americans to conclude that the political process was not working for them and that more drastic measures were necessary.

Dr. Geschwender identifies a number of factors that contributed to the rise of black insurgency during this period. These factors include:

  • The failure of the political process to address the grievances of black Americans
  • The increasing militancy of the black power movement
  • The rise of black nationalism
  • The Vietnam War

The book concludes by examining the legacy of black insurgency. Dr. Geschwender argues that the rise of black insurgency during this period had a profound impact on American society. It helped to raise awareness of the plight of black Americans and it forced the government to take action to address their grievances. However, it also led to a backlash from white Americans, who feared the growing power of the black community.

Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency, 1930-1970, is a groundbreaking work that provides a comprehensive understanding of the causes and consequences of black insurgency. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in African American history, the civil rights movement, or political science.
