General Roswell Ripley was a key figure in the defense of Charleston during the American Civil War. As commander of the city's fortifications, he played a pivotal role in repelling Union attacks and preventing the city from falling into enemy hands.

Ripley was born in Vermont in 1795. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1814 and served in the War of 1812. After the war, he remained in the army and rose through the ranks. In 1844, he was appointed commander of the Third Artillery Regiment.

When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Ripley was assigned to command the defenses of Charleston. He immediately began strengthening the city's fortifications and preparing for an attack. On April 12, 1861, Confederate forces under Ripley's command fired on Fort Sumter, which was held by Union forces. This attack marked the beginning of the Civil War.

Ripley continued to command the defenses of Charleston throughout the war. He successfully repelled Union attacks on the city in 1862 and 1863. In 1864, he led Confederate forces to victory at the Battle of Secessionville. However, Ripley was unable to prevent the Union from capturing Fort Sumter in 1865.

After the war, Ripley retired from the army and moved to South Carolina. He died in 1887 and is buried in Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston.
