The 1950s and 1960s were the golden years of Sid Hartman's career. He covered the rise of the Minneapolis Lakers, the dominance of the Green Bay Packers, and the emergence of the Minnesota Vikings. Hartman was also a close friend of legendary Twins owner Calvin Griffith, and he played a key role in bringing the team to Minnesota.

In 1965, Hartman was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was the first sportswriter to receive this honor, and it is a testament to his impact on the game. Hartman was also inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Twins Hall of Fame in 2014.
