The City of Benares was a British passenger ship that had been chartered by the British government to evacuate children from the United Kingdom to Canada during the early days of World War II.

There were 90 children on board the City of Benares, ranging in age from 5 to 14. They were all accompanied by adult chaperones.

The ship was also carrying a crew of 208 and 12 passengers.

The City of Benares left Liverpool on August 25, 1939, bound for Quebec City.

On September 3, the ship was about 100 miles (160 km) west of Ireland when it was attacked by a German submarine.

The submarine fired two torpedoes, which struck the City of Benares amidships.

The ship sank in just a few minutes.

Of the 90 children on board, only 13 survived.

All 12 of the adult passengers also survived, as well as 146 of the crew members.

The sinking of the City of Benares was a tragedy that shocked the world.

It was one of the worst maritime disasters of World War II.

The loss of so many innocent children was particularly heartbreaking.

The sinking of the City of Benares is a reminder of the horrors of war.

It is also a reminder of the importance of protecting children.

We must never forget the children who lost their lives on the City of Benares.

Their story is a reminder of the terrible cost of war.

The Children of the City of Benares

The children who died on the City of Benares came from all walks of life.

Some were from wealthy families, while others were from poor families.

Some were from big cities, while others were from small towns.

But they all had one thing in common: they were all innocent victims of war.

Here are a few of their stories:

  • Johnnie Boden was a 10-year-old boy from Liverpool.
  • Mollie Dowse was a 12-year-old girl from London.
  • Peter Gould was a 7-year-old boy from Manchester.
  • Susan Haughton was a 9-year-old girl from Birmingham.
  • David Jones was a 14-year-old boy from Cardiff.

These are just a few of the children who died on the City of Benares.

Their stories are a reminder of the terrible cost of war.

The Legacy of the City of Benares

The sinking of the City of Benares is a tragedy that will never be forgotten.

It is a reminder of the horrors of war and the importance of protecting children.

The legacy of the City of Benares lives on in the many memorials that have been built in honor of the children who died.

There is a memorial in Liverpool, where the ship set sail.

There is a memorial in Quebec City, where the ship was headed.

And there is a memorial in London, where many of the children came from.

The memorials to the City of Benares are a reminder of the innocent lives that were lost on that tragic day.

They are also a reminder of the importance of peace.
